What a funny word to say…it’s pronounced “THAH-LATES“….but that’s about the only thing funny about them! They are everywhere and in nearly every person’s body in our country. They’re a class of chemicals used for many things including making plastics softer and malleable (think your shower curtain) and even solvents in makeup (think nail polish and moisturizers). And you know that new car smell we like so much…phthalates are the source! The main difficulty is that they interfere with our hormonal system (called endocrine disruptors) and alter sex characteristics, lower sperm count dramatically, induce cancer, diabetes, cause thyroid damage and more!
